The British Museum
The British Museum is a prestigious art museum of human history and culture in the city of London. The history of the British Museum comes back to its establishment in 1753 with the collections of the scientist and physician Sir Hans Sloane. Sir Hans Sloane was born on April 16th of 1660 and died January 11 of 1753. This museum had officially opened to the public on January 15th of 1759 in Bloomsbury in the Montagu House, which was on the site of the current building of the museum.
The British Museum collections are number as more than eight million objects, which are among the most comprehensive and largest in the world. These collections are originated from all continents, which documents and illustrates the story of culture of humanity since its beginnings to the present. This museum is known as a non departmental body, which is sponsored by the Department for Media, Sport and Culture. The director of this museum since 2002 is Neil Macgregor. Neil Macgregor is the museum director and an art historian born on June 16 of 1946. By the late 19th century the unique collections of this museum had increased, which made the building of the museum not big enough for the collections.
