The Louvre Museum
What is the Louvre Museum?. Also known as Musée du Louvre is one of the largest museums in the world. This museum is known to be a historic monument and the most visited art museum worldwide.
The Louvre Museum history comes back to 1793. The museum was established on August 10th of 1793 with an exhibition of 540 paintings, which the majority of the artworks being royal and confiscated through church property. This museum is located in the city of Paris, France. This museum is housed in the Louvre Palace. The Louvre Palace had begun in the late 12th century as a fortress built by Phillip II. In the basement of the museum there are visible remnants of the fortress. Due to several structural problems of the building in 1796 the museum was closed until 1801. During the French Revolution which occurred from 1789 to 1799, the National Assembly stated that the Louvre should be use as a museum to exhibit the masterpieces of the nation. The Louvre Pyramid is a large metal and glass pyramid, which is surrounded by three smaller pyramids. It serves as the main entrance to the Musée du Louvre. The Louvre Pyramid was completed in 1989.
The art in the Louvre Museum is divided in eight departments, which are the following:

2- Near Eastern Antiques
3- Greek, Etruscan and Roman
4- Decorative Arts
5- Sculpture
6- Prints and Drawings
7- Islamic Art
8- Painting.
The collection of the Louvre Museum paintings are based on more than six thousand works of art from the 13th century to the 1848. Some of the Louvre gallery works are the following:
1- Roman portrait of Marcus Agrippa (25 BC)
2- Terracotta cup, Islamic art from Iraq (9th century)
3- The Moneylenders, Flemish painting from 1514
4- Diana Bathing, Boucher from 1742
5- The Fortune Teller, Italian baroque painting, etc.
